Commuter Rail Station Urban Design Templates
Project Description
Mark Leese, while with another firm, developed these templates for station elements for four commuter rail corridors. Objectives included:
Provide a methodology for allowing a blending of elements that are: standard throughout the system, unique to a corridor, and in some cases, unique to a station
Establish a default design direction for each corridor and parameters for customization at appropriate stations
Establish a base line for costing station improvements
Provide a basis for determining the amount of additional funding required when a local jurisdiction requires improvements whose costs exceed the base cost
Identify elements of station design, and provide information on each element, including, in some cases, placement
RTD's overarching goal is to create a regional civic transit architecture that is permanent, functional and pleasant, and that contributes to its context – not only the larger transit system, but also the neighborhoods and communities in which the stations are located.
Mark Leese’s Role
Mark developed four architectural concepts, wrote the guidelines, and created a presentation that he delivered to each of the communities, various committees, and local government representatives.
